And possibly on some microcosmic level this is simply neoliberalism at work: the rise of a privileged elite who are infallible, whose choices remain untouchable, whose errors can always be sacked away without justification. Appoint the system coach and then fire them for playing excessively that system. Hire the project manager and later discard them for taking too long. And most importantly show gratitude; for your modest increases in ticket costs, for your new summer signings, for the reality that the grownups – however well qualified – are in charge.
