A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the site managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, as per local media.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the scene.

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to establish their whereabouts," added an official.

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."
