Harsh Winter Storms Claim Five Lives in the Gaza Strip Amid Desperate Living Situations in Temporary Shelters.

Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four people. These deaths highlights the perilous situation that continue after more than two years of devastating bombardment and severe lack of aid.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, aid groups report that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to withstand frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the deceased were two women, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in every possible way," said a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three members of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell on top of their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on that day began clearing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population live in improvised shelters because their homes were turned into ruins over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Truce

Local health authorities, part of the Hamas-run government, says more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their remains brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, stated on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – 60 boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began because of armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of bullets. These numbers, he said, represented cases where sufficient information had been gathered to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "So what the international community now terms calm would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season after the war between the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed around 1,200 people and took hostage 251 more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
