No fewer than six people have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in Ghana.

The midweek "tragic" incident seems to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of candidates who breached security protocols and stormed the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

22 additional individuals were hurt, including 5 who remain in serious state.

A large crowd had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, the capital, with the hope of enlisting in the military.

Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the wounded in hospital.
