It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing viewers to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser avoids is what Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
